Food Allergy Awareness: Let's have a chat.

Let’s chat about food allergy! Did you know that Australia is the allergy capital of the world? With this in mind, it wouldn’t be surprising if plenty of people in our lives suffer from food allergy. Food allergy can be a life-threatening condition that affects many children and adults, with 1 in 10 babies developing an allergy by their first birthday. So, it’s time to help raise awareness, start conversations and promote understanding around this topic.

What are common food allergens?

Unfortunately, there are many common food allergens: including peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, fish, eggs, milk, sesame, soy and wheat. And for people living with food allergy, these allergens are found in many different staple pantry items, meals and in most restaurants. Also, those suffering from food allergy can have different reactions. Meaning - after consumption, some people can experience symptoms such as mild itching or a painful stomach, or more severe symptoms such as anaphylaxis (which can be life threatening).

How can I help support someone with food allergies?

Whether you have a friend, classmate, co-worker or family member who has a food allergy, it is important to make an effort to help however you can.

5 Tips on how to care for someone with food allergy:

  • If hosting an event, ask them about their specific allergies and help cater to them

  • Encourage and remind the person with a food allergy to carry their medication with them at all times

  • Suggest safe dining options or venues when organising gatherings

  • Make an effort to read and understand food labels

  • Offer emotional support and understanding

Do you currently know someone who has a food allergy?

  • I sure do!

  • I don't think so

Food allergy awareness is crucial to promote safety and understanding for those with this condition. By working together - we can create a more inclusive and safe environment for everyone.
